: : September 2006
August seems to have been a very busy month - it seemed like there was something happening every weekend! I was sorry not to be able to make it to Athelhampton, if only to see Nigel Hedge’s best Captain Mainwaring impression, but I understand those who did go enjoyed the day - I look forward to reading someone’s report! Also, I hear that the Wroughton Challenger show was a great day out, with plenty of interesting attractions as well as the cars - hopefully next year we’ll be able to support this one in greater numbers.
My thanks to everyone who came along and supported the Gymkhana on 20th August, particularly those who turned up early to help get everything set up. The day went very well, with only a short burst of rain, although commiserations are due to Lucie and Richard, who missed out by one point on successfully defending their trophy. Honours at the end of the day went to Nigel Knowles of Salisbury MGOC.
Our club stand at the Hampshire Pageant of Motoring was well supported on both days, and I understand quite a lot of newsletters were given out to interested people who we will hopefully see coming along to meetings soon! Thanks to Richard Platt for booking the stand for both days, and to Martin Charles for his sterling work in making sure that we had good representation on both days. I was sorry to have missed this one, but a visit from my parents meant that I had other “duties” to attend to - however, Bryan was glad of somewhere to escape to on the Monday and reported that it was an excellent show, and one we should be looking to support again next year.
A couple of things coming up in September, that you should see listed in the Events page - firstly on 17th September, we have a club stand booked at the Wessex Classic Car Show at Bovington. If you haven’t already got your entry form in, then you’ve missed the deadline for being guaranteed a place on the showground - however, it’s still worth ringing Jon Preddy the organiser if you’re interested in coming along, as you may be able to turn up and pay on the day if you say you’re on the club stand. Convoy will be setting off from Empress of Blandings, with additional rendezvous at the St Leonards Hotel - for times, please call me on 02380 326147 or look on the 1009 website.
We also have the opportunity to visit the new ship that Robin Plumley has recently brought back from Norway, to the Southampton Oceanography Centre. Provisionally set for Tuesday 26th September, this will be an evening visit (approx 7pm onwards), and we need details of names and registration numbers in advance. Please let me know if you are interested, so that I can pass details to Robin. (Webmaster's note: due to a change to the ship's schedule this event has had to be cancelled).
Finally, the Inter-Club Quiz League starts in October - dates have been changed to the FIRST Thursday of each month (Oct ober- March) to allow Salisbury MGOC to join us, so the first round will take place at the Empress of Blandings, on Thursday 5th October, from 8pm onwards. If anyone wants to volunteer to set questions, I would be more than happy to relinquish the role of question master!
