Martin's Mumblings : : April 2007

Well the 2007 season is now well into its stride. We opened with 1022 Winchester group annual CobWeb spin. The annual visits to either, Arundal Castle for Andy Harris's 1006 Chichester group spring gathering or Brooklands MG Era show are also memories now. I find it a little hard to comprehend, but there are still two rounds of the winter quiz league to go! We will be cheering on our very own team, Here We Go Again, as they continue their relentless pursuit of Swinners Winners.

I’m pleased to report entries for the New Forest Run on June 3rd are arriving with Lucie steadily. I’ve had a number of e-mail and phone enquiries, it is all starting to come together nicely. I know Tania, Malcolm and Andy had a very good meeting with the people at Exbury Gardens and I for one am really looking forward to finishing there.

Noggin Natter

Again, nice to see so many of you at the Blandings at the beginning of the month, although for the first time in many a month we had no new faces. Of course we were all slightly sad to hear Tania announce her formal retirement from the post of Secretary.

For the first time I was able to grab 5 minutes to chat to Andy and Jan Marsh. Andy is the proud owner of the very nice 1994 model MG RV8 and he told me who they came to be the car's custodians. Many years ago, pre-children as Jan put it, they owned an MG BGT but as the family came along so that car had to go. But Andy has always had an interest in old cars and has a friend who is keen active member of the VSCC. Going to events with this friend had kept Andy’s interest alive and the dream of one day owning another classic. In 2004, whilst they were on holiday in the Cotswolds, they decided to visit the National Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon. As they wandered around looking at the cars Andy would say to Jan "What do you think of that?". According to Andy this was met with the same response every time, “Not much!”. Then they came across an RV8 to which Jan, without any prompting from Andy, said “I like that”. This was on the Wednesday, and it set Andy to thinking that following week-end was the MGCC Silverstone event, and they decided to go. There they met a dealer who imported RV8s and they saw the car they now own. It is a one owner car from Japan, in Oxford Blue metallic, with cream leather interior. They arranged to go to the dealers for a test drive, liked it even more, and decided to purchase it. The dealer took care of all the paperwork, including re-registering the car on an age related plate, since when thay have enjoyed the car immensely.

A new venue for our mid-month, a little further north-east than we’ve been for a little while, I suspect? We went to the Malt House Inn at Timsbury, just outside of Romsey. Again pleasing to see so many there, about 20 of you, and a welcome change for our members centred closer to Southampton. We spent a very pleasant evening in a very nice pub with excellent bar food and a restaurant. I know I won’t be thanked but Jan Marsh, along with husband Andy, had enjoyed a birthday meal so our congratulations go to her. By the way Jan, I think your Grandson is right, you really should have worn that ‘It’s MY birthday’ badge! Our thoughts also went out to Trevor and Michelle Rydzynski, sadly Trevor’s father passed away recently, and we all wish you our condolences.
