Martin's Mumblings : : December 2006

So another year end draws towards its inevitable close and for me it has been something of an eventful year. I became more involved with the branch activities, something I would encourage all of you who do not yet get too involved, to do. I have found, much to my surprise, that actually helping to do things makes events even more fun and so much more rewarding. I have taken on the role of trying to give you something to read each month. Hmmm! Trying it certainly is sometimes, usually when it is about the 29th of the month and the only thing I have in mind is the picture for the cover, but having a deadline does wonders for the powers of concentration.

Then there is getting involved with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight air ambulance charity, again via the club, that is, like the branch, very rewarding. So I look forward to the coming year, which just leaves me to wish you and your loved ones, a very happy Christmas and a healthy, fun filled 2007.

Robin Plumley has been in touch, he was actually 200 miles off Portugal in his new ship at the time. You may remember he kindly invited the club to have a VIP tour of the new research vessel, circumstances conspired against that trip happening. Robin tells us the vessel will be moored in Southampton for the first half of January and that if we would like to go and see her we would be more than welcome. The dates of Sunday 7th or 14th seem best. Please let Tania which you would prefer and she will arrange it with Robin.

Bits, Bobs and the odd Spare Part

Now I said I was worried about not having something for the ladies amongst us in these columns. Well if you're stuck for a Christmas present suggestion to place under the nose of your car mad significant other, why not try this?

The CarMasutra, hold hard it’s not what you’re thinking! The Man Who Loves His Car, written by Mary Bird. Aimed at women who need to drag their men out of the garage once in a while, it is a collection of humorous poems, cartoons and witty observations on man’s obsession with motoring. Inspired by Mary’s visit to the Classic Motor Show a few years ago, there she noticed that the men became ever so less focused on their partners once cars, tools and auto-jumble hove into view. It is reported to be selling well and is priced at £9.99, available from Waterstones, Ottakers and online at Amazon.

Oh dear, what’s in a name... well, not much, you may say? But it would appear that the Nanjing Corporation may have something to learn about tradition. They exhibited at a trade expo in China earlier this year, under a huge MG logo were the words, “Modern Gentleman”? Is this their idea of rebranding? Well ,your guess is a good as anybody else’s, but let us all hope somebody has a word with the board and puts them back on the right path.

It pays to advertise... Did You Know?
  • Citroen had the world’s largest motoring advertisement when, between 1925 and 1935 the French firm’s name adorned the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was emblazoned in 250,000 light-bulbs forming vertically positioned letters 30m high.
  • Saab claimed to have built the biggest dashboard in the world for a hoarding in London in 1993. The ad consisted of a gigantic replica of the instrument panel and steering wheel from the Saab 900.
  • With help from Ryanair, Jaguar unveiled the largest ever car logo in 1996. The car maker’s green and white livery was plastered all over a Boeing 737 used on Ryanair’s scheduled routes.
